SBRT Founded in 2017 and officially registered on 19 December 2018, the Society for Bacteriophage Research and Therapy is committed to advancing the study and application of bacteriophages, with a primary focus on tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The society aims to establish bacteriophages as a viable therapeutic option for fighting drug-resistant infections. The society acts as a collaborative platform for researchers, scientists, academics, and clinicians to share knowledge and build partnerships with phage experts worldwide. It encourages interdisciplinary research into bacteriophages, exploring their potential in areas such as antibacterial agents, vaccines, gene therapy, diagnostics, and drug delivery systems. Members also examine the ecological presence of bacteriophages in environments like river water and sewage. With a membership surpassing 85 individuals, including 70 lifetime members, the society brings together professionals involved in both fundamental and applied bacteriophage research. It offers both annual and lifetime membership options to support its mission.

Given the global challenge of AMR and the slow pace of new antibiotic development, society stresses the urgent need for coordinated efforts to overcome barriers in bacteriophage therapeutics, leveraging collective expertise to foster innovation and impact at both national and international levels.
The society organises technical conferences, seminars, and workshops across various regions of the country to bridge the gap between academic curricula and practical application for students and research scholars. It recognises outstanding contributions by honouring members with Young Scientist Awards, Early Career Research Awards, and appointments to the Editorial Board of the Newsletter for significant advances in phage therapy research. This peer-reviewed journal maintains high standards, featuring reviews and research papers on bacteriophage-related topics, including genetic engineering of phages, in vitro and in vivo experiments, and molecular screening of phages, evaluated by experts in the field.
The society hosts technical conferences, seminars, and workshops across various regions of the country to bridge the gap between academic curricula and practical application for students and research scholars. Its flagship event, the International Conference on Bacteriophage Therapy and Antimicrobial Research, is held annually. The 6th conference is scheduled to take place in Varanasi in 2025. Previous conferences were held at VIT, Vellore (2019, 1st), virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic (2021, 2nd), Dharwad University, Karnataka (2022, 3rd), University of Madras, Chennai (2023, 4th), and Bhavan’s College Campus, Mumbai (2024, 5th). In 2020, the annual conference could not be organised due to the full-scale COVID-19 pandemic.
